Airport Fire Service – Our Safety Heroes
Airport Fire Service (AFS) plays a vital role in maintaining airport safety. AFS operates 16 hours a day, 365 days a year. The team is made up of 12 staff who work in three teams. The teams rotate on shifts throughout the day.
AFS fire fighters respond to over 50 calls per year, mostly for aircraft, medical, general fire and hazardous substance emergencies. They also perform a wide range of airfield services including runway inspections, wildlife management, perimeter security and foreign object management.
Fire Safety
Invercargill Airport is rated Category 5 for rescue and firefighting purposes, according to International Civil Aviation Organisation classification.
We are resourced to respond with multiple vehicles, with a total capacity of over 1,200 litres of foam solution at a rate of 6,200 litres combined per minute, along with over 400kg dry chemical powder.
The AFS operates specialised firefighting vehicles. The current appliances were built in New Zealand on existing chassis and a new German-made truck will be arriving from Austria in November.
A brand new state-of-the-art Rosenbauer Panther 6×6 fire appliance will be arriving at Invercargill Airport in November. The team will train with the new vehicle for a month before fire appliance is set to work airside.
