Airport Emergency Exercise Drill – Wednesday 11 February 2015

Members of the public are advised that Invercargill Airport is to hold its biennial emergency exercise this week.

General Manager Chloe said the exercise, which allows airport staff and emergency services to practice full scale emergency response procedures, will take place following the last flight arrival on Wednesday night, after 8.00pm and will not affect scheduled flights.

“Members of the public should be aware that it is an exercise drill not a real emergency and that roads will be closed into the airport throughout the duration of the exercise.  We thank the public for their co-operation and patience during this exercise which is vital to ensure public safety.”

2014.08.04 Demolition commences

The sound of bulldozers were heard at Invercargill Airport this week as demolition of the baggage reclaim commenced. Demolition of the existing terminal building will be completed in two stages with the first construction stage estimated to be completed in the first quarter of 2015.

Invercargill Airport Chairman Joe O’Connell said that while demolition of the baggage reclaim and walkway had commenced last Sunday, there had already been significant preparation work that had taken place in the month prior. This included creating a construction access road and the formation of an airside road.

In addition, visitors to the airport will now collect their luggage in a temporary baggage reclaim enclosure outside the terminal building, and car parking and pedestrian walkways have been adjusted to accommodate the construction site.

The next part of the building project will involve ground preparation and construction of stage one. Mr O’Connell said “We are pleased that works are now well underway as scheduled and look forward to working closely with our project team over the coming months.”

16 June 2014 – Contract awarded to build new Invercargill Airport terminal

Invercargill Airport Chairman Joe O’Connell is pleased to announce that Invercargill based construction company Amalgamated Builders Ltd (ABL) has been awarded the main construction contract as part of the terminal upgrade project.  This includes demolition of the existing terminal building in two stages, construction of a new terminal building and erection of a temporary baggage reclaim enclosure.

ABL were selected over a number of other local and national companies through a prequalification process that began in February.  ABL is a privately-owned company with strong Southland roots, more than 40 years’ industry expertise and four sites throughout the South Island including Invercargill and Queenstown.

Mr O’Connell said “We were pleased with the quality of tenders received which resulted in a final tender price that met with our expectations.  The airport company still anticipates the terminal building to be completed by Christmas 2015 and that the $13M investment previously committed to by the shareholders will be sufficient to fund the completion of this project.

ABL director, shareholder and area manager Bruce Middleton is looking forward to getting to work on the project.  ”We are very pleased to be involved in such a significant project for Southland”

Construction for the airport terminal project is scheduled to commence in July.

Media Release : Invercargill Airport terminal reaches next stage of development

20 FEBRUARY 2014

Expressions of interest will open soon for the main contractor and café operator for the new Invercargill Airport terminal.

The preliminary design phase, which included architectural layouts and foundation plans, was completed in December 2013 and since this time detailed design work has been undertaken and is nearing completion.

Invercargill Airport is now moving to the next stage of the development process which involves a prequalification process for the main contractor which will be advertised through the Government Electronic Tenders Service (GETS) tomorrow afternoon.

The construction contract for the terminal redevelopment includes demolition of the existing building, construction of the new terminal building and erection of a temporary baggage reclaim enclosure.

Invercargill Airport Chairman Joe O’Connell said completion of the pre-qualification process is expected by the end of March.

“Assuming no delay in the tender process and subject to the construction timeframe being agreed, we estimate a completion date of around Christmas 2015,” he said.

In parallel with the construction prequalification process, Invercargill Airport will be calling for expressions of interest in the café operation.  This process is expected to begin next week, with the airport looking for a café operator to provide a vibrant focal point for the new terminal building. This presents an attractive business opportunity for interested parties.

“We have already had interest both locally and nationally for the construction contract as well as the café operation, so we are pleased to be starting the official process,” Mr O’Connell said.

Invercargill airport is pleased to be moving to the next stage and encourages companies to register their interest.
